The Volunteer Ombudsman: The Eyes, Ears and Friendly Face of the Program

“Ombudsman” is a Swedish word that means citizen representative. In California, volunteers represent the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program when they make visits to residents in long-term care facilities. They are the eyes and ears of the program and the heart of its mission to advocate for residents and their families.

Volunteer ombudsmen have the authority, by law, to enter a facility. This is the key to the effectiveness of the ombudsman in his or role as an investigator and advocate for long-term care residents.

The Rewards of Volunteering

Every time a volunteer ombudsman walks into a resident’s room, it’s a chance to make a real difference in someone's life. It may also be a timely opportunity to discover a situation that needs to be addressed — and with your help, resolved in a way that has a profoundly positive impact on that individual’s everyday life.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer ombudsman please call us at 1-805-967-0499. Or click here to fill out the Volunteer Ombudsman Application Form.
